Look up!
A few weeks ago, we had just finished cleaning up after dinner when I heard a very loud "buzzing" sound coming from our front room.  I went to explore and discovered that a bee had somehow made it into our house and had become obsessed with our ceiling light. The bee had flown into the open end of one of the fluted light covers and was circling the light bulb with reckless abandon.

I instantly noticed two things: 1) to my horror, as the bee was buzzing madly around the light bulb, he was raising all kinds of dust which became plainly visible in the sunlight streaming through our windows.  I am responsible for dusting in my home and it was obvious that I had been negligent in my light fixture dusting duties. Busted. 2) the bee buzzed around and around but would not look nor fly UP!

I coaxed, cajoled, encouraged, begged and pleaded the bee to "Look up" but to no avail. Finally, I tipped the entire light fixture sideways so that the bee would have no choice but to exit the light cover.  This strategy seemed to work because the bee flew right out of his trap. However, as soon as I returned the ceiling light to its normal position, he flew right back into a different light cover.  The whole mortifying moment with dust then played itself out all over again.  Doubly busted.

I sadly report that the bee eventually died.  I don't know if it was the exertion or the dust that killed him.  I remember distinctly thinking though, "There is a valuable lesson here."  In the midst of stress, that bee did not think to look up when the simple act of looking up would have solved all of his problems.

If you are a prayerful person, the implication of this lesson is obvious but even if you are not, there is another, profound meaning.  In the midst of this obviously stressful situation, the bee limited his focus, became locked in a set way of doing things and consequently missed an opportunity that would have made things better.
